Phantom of the Paradise live?!Remember when we told you guys about the badass series of films being programmed by Edgar Wright at the New Beverly Cinema (“Beverly Cinema Gets it Wright” – November 2007)? Sure you do. Well, our man Andrew Kasch was in attendance at last night’s screening of Brian DePalma’s Phantom of the Paradise and got some very interesting news.

After a chat with composer Paul Williams, Kasch learned that a stage musical of Paradise is in the works, with producer Edward Pressman and director DePalma involved! One has to wonder, however, if this is the same project that started it’s life as a remake of the film? Details are scarce, but we’ll be sure to fill you in when we know more!

For those unfamiliar, Phantom of the Paradise was a high-camp horror/comedy/musical from 1974 that told the tragic story of a brilliant composer whose work and life’s love was stolen from him, all in one fell swoop that disfigures him, as well. He vows to take his revenge in the campiest way possible.

We’ll keep our ears open for more on the Phantom of the Paradise stage production and let you know when we hear more!
