Labyrinth Seeks Oscar

As was previously mentioned when the release date was moved from October to December, Variety got the official word that Guillermo Del Toro’s magnificent Pan’s Labyrinth (review) will represent Mexico in this year’s foreign language Oscar bid.
When Picturehouse announced that Labyrinth was moving out of its obvious October release and into December, it was seen by some as a bad sign, but those smart guys out there in Internetland knew it was done to keep it closer to the Oscars. Now, with its limited release on December 29th here in the States, followed by a 35-market run beginning January 12th, all eyes will be on the fantasy/horror epic, which I can’t see having much worthwhile competition from any country if the critics who have seen it so far are to be trusted. And who doesn’t trust a critic?
Picturehouse also confirmed that, while Labyrinth is going for Best Foreign Language Film, they will also be vying for Best Director, Best Set Design, Best Art Direction, and Best Actress for lead Ivana Baquero. Can you imagine how cool it’d be to be able to refer to Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro? That just feels right when you say it out loud.
