Axe Giant Chops its Way to Syfy Tomorrow NightReady to witness the reimaging of the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan as a monstrous, axe-wielding movie maniac? You only have to tune in to Syfy tomorrow night. Yep, tomorrow night. Because Thursday nights are now the new night for Syfy Original movies.

The premiere of Axe Giant (formerly the Wrath of Paul Bunyan) starts things off in a big way.

The filmmakers sent out a press release letting us all know everything we need to in order to prepare for a giant mongoloid Paul Bunyan hacking and slashing his way to Syfy tomorrow night.

From the Press Release
AXE GIANT: THE WRATH OF PAUL BUNYAN, the new horror/creature feature from producer/director Gary Jones (BOOGEYMAN 3) and executive producer Jeff Miller, will get a Syfy premiere on Thursday, June 13th, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). The movie will be retitled simply AXE GIANT for Syfy.

“It’s great to be in business with Syfy again,” says Jones. “I have had a good run with almost all my movies airing on the network, starting with my first film, MOSQUITO, and am very happy to add AXE GIANT to the lineup.”

AXE GIANT won the Audience Award at the Shockfest Film Festival in November and tied for most awards won. Film Radar named it one of the Top Indie Horror Films of 2012, with reviewer Jonathan Weichsel saying that it is “a real fun ride. You rarely see this kind of genre film made today with so much care.”

The movie recently played at the Motor City Nightmares and Texas Frightmare Weekend conventions.

“We’re excited to be airing on Syfy,” says Miller. “We look forward to reaching such a large audience with this unique take on Paul Bunyan lore.”

AXE GIANT is a contemporary take on the tall tale of lumberjack Paul Bunyan. Kids at a first-offenders’ boot camp discover that the legend of Paul Bunyan is real, but is much more horrifying than they could have imagined. The survivors must team up with the local sheriff to stop the 15-foot giant’s new rampage of terror. The movie stars genre vet Joe Estevez, Dan Haggerty (TV’s “Grizzly Adams”), Tom Downey (Syfy’s WAR OF THE WORLDS and JOLLY ROGER: MASSACRE AT CUTTER’S COVE), and Tim Lovelace (MOSQUITO). Amber Connor, Jesse Kove, Kristina Kopf, Clifton Williams, Victoria Ramos, Jill Evyn, and former WWF wrestler Chris Hahn round out the cast. This is the first major role for Kove, son of veteran actor Martin Kove (THE KARATE KID 1-3, RAMBO).

Miller (BALLISTICA, HELLBLOCK 13) and Jones wrote and produced through their company, Kinetic Filmworks, along with newcomer Jason Ancona. Robert Kurtzman’s Creature Corps handled the bulk of makeup FX, with Kurtzman (creator of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN) and Philip R. Garrett (HORRORS OF WAR) joining the team as co-producers. Gary Jones’ Acme Art FX created more than 500 visual effects shots for the film.

Edward Douglas of Midnight Syndicate composed the score. Country punkabilly singer Hick’ry Hawkins wrote and performed the original theme song, “The Ballad of Paul Bunyan.” AXE GIANT is currently receiving a limited theatrical release.
