This Day in Horror History: A TALE OF TWO SISTERS Was Released in 2003

South Korea has become a hotbed of horror in recent years with movies like Train to Busan and filmmakers like Bong Joon Ho making waves. The first Korean horror film to really make an impression on me, however, was A Tale of Two Sisters, written and directed by Jee-woon Kim and released on this day in 2003.
A Tale of Two Sisters stars Kap-su Kim, Jung-ah Yum, and Soo-jung Lim and inspired the American remake The Uninvited (released in 2009). If it’s been a while, or if you’ve yet to experience A Tale of Two Sisters for yourself, check out the trailer and synopsis below.
Synopsis:
After being institutionalized in a mental hospital, Korean teen Su-mi (Yeom Jeong-ah) reunites with her beloved sister, Su-yeon (Su-jeong Lim), and they return to live at their country home. The girls’ widower father (Mun Geun-yeong) has remarried, and the siblings are immediately resentful of his new wife, Eun-joo (Kap-su Kim). As Su-mi and Su-yeon try to resume their regular lives, strange events plague the house, leading to surprising revelations and a shocking conclusion.
Trivia:
The movie is inspired by a famous Korean folktale, called “Janghwa Heungryeonjeon” which although has been adapted to film several times, this one specifically is not a remake of any of them and is its own original project. (Source)
When the film was originally released, It became both the highest-grossing Korean horror film of all time and the first one to be screened in American theatres. (Source)
