TWIZTID’S “QUARANTINE MOVIE REVIEW”: HALLOWEEN 2018

Back again like the moon in the night sky, it is I, the bringer of “Quarantine Movie Reviews” the one & only jAMIE madrox!

This edition of “QMR” is dedicated to 2018’s Halloween (directed by David Gordon Green; written by Green, Danny McBride, and Jeff Fradley; based on a story and characters by the immortal John Carpenter and Debra Hill).

Synopsis:
It’s been 40 years since Laurie Strode survived a vicious attack from crazed killer Michael Myers on Halloween night. Locked up in an institution, Myers manages to escape when his bus transfer goes horribly wrong. Laurie now faces a terrifying showdown when the masked madman returns to Haddonfield, Ill. — but this time, she’s ready for him.

Wipe away most of what you know and half of what you’ve seen! 2018’s incarnation of the Michael Myers character gets a major edit in his timeline courtesy of McBride and the writing team. In this timeline, after the first movie (1978’s Halloween) “The Shape” is apprehended by the Haddonfield authorities. Four decades later, a would-be investigative documentary duo looks up Michael hoping for a Q&A sit down about what motivates a killer to kill. Needless to say, Myers is like, “Fuck y’all!” and gives ’em the silent treatment while becoming fixated on the fact that they have the actual mask from his killing spree 40 years ago.

We see that because of PTSD Laurie Strode (Myers’ original victim that got away) has become a modern-day version of The Terminator franchise’s Sarah Conner; she’s obsessed with guns, tactical maneuvers and survival of the fittest, preparing for a head-to-head with the inevitable killer waiting to add her to his list of victims.

Laurie’s Daughter and Granddaughter are introduced to the story, and with a snap of Thanos’ fingers, Silver Shamrock, Jamie Llyod, the entire plot for H20, and the rest of Halloween‘s cinematic history, are turned to grains of dust and fade quickly into obscurity as the movie unfolds.

I don’t want to spoil much but let’s say Michael escapes the asylum and his inner GPS leads him right back to the night it all happened–with Laurie as a target on his revengeful mind!

At first, it took me a minute to allow all the other movies and information to fall to the wayside and just enjoy this cinematic effort for the masterpiece it is. The attention to detail and need to tie this movie to John Carpenter’s original is beyond perfect and with Carpenter and original Myers actor Nick Castle attached to the film, fans welcomed it with open arms.

The movie was reintroduced into horror cinema as an intended trilogy with Halloween Kills arriving this Fall and Halloween Ends arriving in 2021. Judging by the success of Halloween, the next two installments are sure to be just as big!

James Jude Courtney’s portrayal of “The Shape” is just as it should be: Dark, relentless, and foreboding. Jamie Lee Curtis holds her own as viewers surely expected.

After recalibrating the franchise yet one more time in my head I can clearly say now that I am “all in” and “highly anticipating” the arrival on the next two movies Green and McBride have lined up for us.

See this movie!
