This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Vincenzo Natali

Born on this day in 1969: screenwriter and director Vincenzo Natali

Natali got his start as a storyboard artist, working on cartoons like Beetlejuice and Tales From the Cryptkeeper. His feature directorial debut was Cube, which he also co-wrote. The film follows a group of people who wake up in a labyrinthine cube and must face puzzles and booby traps in the hopes of escaping. Cube was well-received, winning a number of festival prizes and cult following. Two sequels followed, neither of them directed by Natali.

Other genre films in Natali’s resume include Splice, about a creature created with animal and human DNA; Haunter, about a dead girl who realizes she is stuck in the same day and can reach people in other timelines; and In the Tall Grass, based on a novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill.

On the television side, Natali has directed episodes of Hemlock Grove, The Returned, Orphan Black, Hannibal, Wayward Pines, Luke Cage, The Strain, American Gods, Westworld, and Lost in Space. He also directed the pilot episode of the unaired Tremors series for Syfy Channel.
