Born on this day in 1973: writer/producer Dan Harmon

Dan Harmon is primarily known for his comedy, most notably for creating the NBC sitcom Community. However, there is a lot of weird horror and sci-fi in his career.

Currently, he is the co-creator of the Adult Swim animated sci-fi series Rick and Morty. The show follows a genius – and morally questionable – scientist, Rick, as he drags his ethical teenaged grandson, Morty, on adventures across time and space. One of my favorite episodes is a spoof of Friday the 13th: The Series, even dropping the reference in the episode.

In Community, they had several horror and sci-fi themed episodes, most notably the second season Halloween episode, “Epidemiology.” During a Halloween dance at the community college, the expired military food the Dean serves as refreshments turns the students into zombies.

In addition to Rick and Morty and Community, Dan Harmon co-wrote (with Rob Schrab, who recently directed an episode of CreepshowMonster House, a 2006 animated movie about a sentient house that terrifies a neighborhood.
