RIP: THE THING Producer David Foster

David Foster, the prolific producer behind John Carpenter’s The Thing, died Monday in Los Angeles at the age of 90.

Foster is survived by his wife, Jackie Pattiz, and their sons Gary, Tim and Greg, daughters-in-law Lisa and Marci, and grandchildren Daryn, Drew, Kayla, Jackson, and Lucas. His funeral will be held at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City at 11 a.m. on Jan. 2. The family asks that donations be made to the Los Angeles Jewish Home.

On top of serving as a producer on Carpenter’s The Thing, Foster had an entertainment career that spanned six decades and included more than 30 films including The Mask of Zorro, The River Wild, Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2, Running Scared, The Core, Hart’s War, Collateral Damage with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the remake of Carpenter’s The Fog.

He also served as executive producer on that remake of The Thing back in 2011.

John Carpenter’s The Thing took place in remote Antarctica, where a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.
