This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Roy Scheider

On this day in 1932: Roy Scheider was born.

An iconic actor who appeared in some of the most notable films of the 1970s, Scheider is probably best known to horror fans as Brody, the police chief, in Jaws. He reprised the role in the 1978 sequel, thus fulfilling a three-picture deal with Universal Pictures.

Jaws wasn’t Scheider’s only role in the horror genre. His first feature film was The Curse of the Living Corpse, a low-budget cheapie directed by Del Tenney. He appeared in David Cronenberg’s adaptation of William Burroughs’ Naked LunchDracula II: Ascension; and Dracula III: Legacy.

Scheider was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells. He died February 10, 2008 in hospital in Arkansas.
