Fantastic Fest 2019: BLOOD MACHINES, PARASITE, COLOR OUT OF SPACE, Oh My! Second Wave Revealed

The second wave of Fantastic Fest films have been revealed and this list is just as impressive and intriguing as the first wave!

The closing film of the event has been announced and it’s Rian Johnson’s Agatha Christie-inspired whodunnit Knives Out, which features an ensemble cast that includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lakeith Stanfield, and more. Johnson is confirmed to be in attendance. The festival will also be graced by the presence of Bong Joon-ho and his universally acclaimed film Parasite.

Also splashing across the screens of the South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse will be Blood Machines, the sequel to Carpenter Brut‘s fantastic music video “Turbo Killer”, as well as the US premiere of Richard Stanley’s highly-anticipated Color Out of Space, the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation which stars Nicolas Cage. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will also be in attendance with their latest film Synchronic.

If it’s events you’re looking for, Fantastic Fest is certainly bringing the goods! For example, Morbido’s Abraham Castillo Flores will be in attendance with a lecture titled “The Mórbido Crypt’s Guide to Mexican Fantasy and Horror Cinema,” a co-presentation with The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, founded by film writer/programmer/producer Kier-La Janisse. The sidebar is also supported by Cine Las Americas, the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE), the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin, Fundación Televisa, Alameda Films, and Grupo Galindo.

Flores says: “As Mórbido continues its primal mission to promote Mexican fantasy and horror cinema throughout the world, we are proud to collaborate with Fantastic Fest to highlight three unique films that represent peculiar moments in our complex national film history.”

The three films will be The Black Pit of Dr. M, The Ship of Monsters, and Trampa Infernal, each being a repertory screening.

There will also be a sidebar dedicated to the intersection of the LGBTQ+ community and horror.

“The two most unwavering pieces of my identity – my queerness and my love of horror – come together in some fascinating and unexpected ways over the course of film history,” says FantasticFest programmer Brian Kelley. “I can’t think of a better group of people to explore and celebrate some of the crazy, frequently daring and often challenging films that make up the universe of queer horror with than my Fantastic Fest family.”

Fantastic Fest’s LGBTQ+ sidebar is proudly sponsored by Shudder and co-presented by community partners aGLIFF and OUTsider, the Horror Queers podcast, and drag horror titans Peaches Christ and Louisianna Purchase, who along with Die Felicia will slay at an epic BYOW (Bring Your Own Wig) party in The Highball.
