Is HELLBOY Unadaptable? Is Any Film Based on Mike Mignola’s Comic Doomed?

With the collosal failure of Neil Marshall’s Hellboy still a fresh wound for horror fans, it’s unlikely we’ll see any new adaptations of Mike Mignola’s graphic novel series for many years to come–if ever. Which poses an interesting question: Is Hellboy simply unadaptable? Is any film based on the property doomed to fail?

Despite the perceived popularity of the first two Hellboy movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman as “Big Red” and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien, both were financial failures. The point is, Hellboy has always been a complicated property, one that fans have always had mixed feelings about.
