Has THE NUN Banished THE CROOKED MAN? CONJURING Universe Producer Explains

The Crooked Man

This Summer, we’ll be getting a third Annabelle spinoff from The Conjuring franchise launched by James Wan in 2013; Annabelle Comes Home arrives in US theaters on June 28th. Additionally, we just reported that Conjuring Universe producer Peter Safran said that a sequel to last year’s The Nun is an inevitability.

Still, many Conjuring fans are asking: What’s up with The Crooked Man? The character made a couple of brief appearances in The Conjuring 2 (released in 2016) and struck a chord with horror fans across the globe. In our exclusive interview with Javier Botet last year, the actor who plays The Crooked Man seemed certain that a spinoff featuring the lanky specter would come to fruition–eventually.

Now, Safran has updated us on the status of The Crooked Man, explaining that The Nun may be holding up the character’s time in the limelight. Here’s what he told ComicBooks.com:

“Frequently, the audience tells you what the next one should be. When we did Conjuring 2, we all thought Crooked Man would be the next one out the gate. We just loved it. It was just a great character. Instead, the audience was so fascinated by the nun.”

“It’s not that we won’t do Crooked Man, but you kind of have to balance out [the franchise]. I’m sure that we have ideas of what we want to do beyond this, from the artifact room, but I suspect that we’ll probably … The audience will tell us exactly what we should be doing.”

With Annabelle Comes Home arriving this Summer and a third Conjuring movie in the works for 2020, we’ll certainly be getting our fill of the franchise. Still, we’re hoping The Crooked Man will come out of the shadows for his own feature film at some point. Time will tell.

In the meantime, check out the synopsis and trailer for Annabelle Comes Home below.

Synopsis:
Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren lock the possessed doll in the artifacts room in their house. But when the doll awakens the room’s evil spirits, it soon becomes an unholy night of terror for the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, her friends, and their young baby sitter.

Annabelle Comes Home is written and directed by Gary Dauberman; the film stars Emily Brobst, Patrick Wilson, and Mckenna Grace.
