What’s Next for the MonsterVerse After GODZILLA VS KONG? Producer Offers Insight

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is definitely one of the most hotly-anticipated movies of 2019. The film serves as a sequel to both Godzilla 2014 and Kong: Skull Island and proceeds Godzilla vs Kong, currently in production eyeing a 2020 release. But fans have already started asking: What comes next?

Legendary purchased the rights for Godzilla and a few other kaiju/titans from Toho, the studio that invented the franchise in 1954. That deal is due to expire in 2020, when ownership will revert back to Toho. So, this seems to suggest the MonsterVerse Legendary has built will end after Godzilla vs Kong.

But not so fast. During a set visit in 2018, the folks at Toho Kingdom grilled producer Alex Garcia on whether or not there’s a future for the MonsterVerse beyond 2020. While his answers were somewhat nebulous, diversionary, and evasive, there was a suggestion that life might continue on in some form.

One of our favorite UK film critics and academics, Mr. H, takes a long hard look at Garcia’s comments and discusses their implications in the video embedded at the top of the article. Give it a spin above, followed by the trailer and synopsis for Godzilla: King of the Monsters below.
