Rest in Peace: Larry Cohen, Director of THE STUFF and IT’S ALIVE, Has Passed Away

It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of writer, director, producer, and so much more, Larry Cohen, who dies at the age of 77. The news comes from actor Shade Rupe, who received an email from Cohen’s best friend explaining the situation. No cause of death has yet been released.

Cohen’s body of work was recently celebrated in the documentary King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen, which is currently streaming on Shudder. The documentary featured interviews with some of Hollywood’s most important names, including J.J. Abrams, Rick Baker, Eric Bogosian, John Landis, Ryan Turek, Martin Scorsese, and many, many more. All spoke about the importance Cohen had on film and of their love of his films, from The Stuff to It’s Alive, as well as his screenwriting work that included Phone Booth and Cellular.

His screenwriting career began in the late ’50s and continued through to 2010, when he wrote the mystery/thriller Messages Deleted. As a director, he was pumping out films in the ’70s and ’80s but took a break between 1996’s Original Gangstas and 2006, when he directed “Pick Me Up”, an episode of the horror anthology series Masters of Horror.

We are heartbroken by the passing of Larry Cohen and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends in this very sad time.

Rest in peace, Larry.
