DREAD Presents: BOOK OF MONSTERS Poster and Blu-ray Artwork Explained

Just a few days ago, we opened up pre-orders for our upcoming DREAD title Book of Monsters. A throwback to the creature features of the 80s, the film is packed with gore, comedy, and heart, and needed artwork to match! The film’s poster, which was designed by The Dude Designs (and can be seen to the right), captured that feel wonderfully. Colorful, splashed with blood, and fully transparent about the monsters you’ll see in the film, it’s the kind of artwork that you wouldn’t hesitate to put on your wall.

Our own Johnny Tabor took The Dude Designs’ artwork and put his own spin on it for the Blu-ray artwork, capturing the feel of a VHS box art that you’d see while wandering aimlessly through the aisles of your local rental store.

Today, we want to highlight and laud these two artists and the work they put into creating their designs. Head on down to read exclusive quotes from Book of Monsters director Stewart Sparke as well as The Dude Designs!

Sparke explains, “When we set out to find an artist to create the poster for Book of Monsters, The Dude Designs was the first person on our list! His stunning poster art for indie hits like Hobo With A Shotgun and Wolfcop demonstrated his passion for classic hand drawn & hand painted posters and was exactly what we were looking for in visualising our 80s throwback creature feature. The Dude created a number of stunning concepts but the final image is one which conjures up memories of the good old VHS days that draws you in with the promise of kick-ass women fighting awesome monsters”

The Dude Designs adds, “It was cool to have some really fun, creative monsters and fantasy elements to work with like from the VHS era of cover art. I needed to create something fun and colourful whilst not being too dark which wouldn’t reflect the film’s more humorous elements. I went with more of a classic film poster than a video cover for Book of Monsters and drew inspiration from The Goonies and all those 80s fantasy adventure films along with a touch of Evil Dead for good measure!”

Here are pictures that show the progression from concept to poster to Blu-ray:

Discussing the Blu-ray artwork, which can be seen below, Sparke states, “As an independent filmmaker, it’s often the case that your movie is re-packaged and marketed completely differently to how you originally intended. But working with the team at Epic Pictures and Dread, it’s been clear as day that they understand exactly the tone and style of Book of Monsters right down to its 80s inspired roots. The Blu-ray artwork by Johnny Tabor is a nostalgic delight to behold and expands upon The Dude Designs excellent poster to create a package that looks like it was picked up off the VHS shelf at your local Blockbuster (R.I.P.). I absolutely can’t wait to add this to my movie collection and even the disk looks like it packs quite a bite!”

DREAD’s Director of Distribution Rob Galluzzo adds, “All our filmmakers have been great to work with when it comes to our collector’s edition Blu-rays, but Stewart, as a fellow fan himself, went above and beyond, and I can confidently say this is one of our most packed releases yet. The movie’s a blast. The story behind its making is even better. And I think loyal collectors will be pleased with what we’ve put together for our Book of Monsters release!”

Sophie’s 18th birthday becomes a bloodbath when monsters descend upon her house and start to devour the party guests. Sophie and her friends must rally together to send their party crashers back to hell.

Written by Paul Butler and directed by Stewart Sparke, Book of Monsters stars Anna Dawson, Lizzie Aaryn-Stanton, Lyndsey Craine, Michaela Longden, Rose Muirhead, and Steph Mossman.
