Can We Expect to See Peter Weller in Neill Blomkamp’s ROBOCOP RETURNS?

When it was first announced that Neill Blomkamp was working on a Robocop Returns, a direct sequel to 1987’s RoboCop that’s was rumored to be set 1 year after that movie, he was asked point blank who his top choice would be to play the titular cyborg-enforcer (aka Officer Alex J. Murphy). Blomkamp didn’t hesitate in his response: “Easy: Peter Weller.”

Peter Weller is, of course, the actor who originally played RoboCop in Paul Verhoeven’s original. Fans agreed it would be awesome to see Weller return to the role he made iconic, and it would follow in the footsteps of Blumhouse’s sequel to Halloween which brought back original heroine and villain, Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle as Laurie Strode and Michael Myers respectively. Plus, actors like Lin Shaye, Harrison Ford, and Robert DiNero prove there are still plenty of meaty roles for actors from the Baby Boomer generation.

Alas, we’re getting word that the 71-year-old Wellers has no interest in reprising the role of Officer Alex J. Murphy—or even appearing in Blomkamp’s movie in a cameo. The word was passed down from Weller’s agent via Super Bro Movies, who nabbed the exclusive.

We’re still excited to see what the District 9/Chappie director has in store for us, but sure do wish Weller would at least pop in for a few seconds of face time. RoboCop Returns has only a shell of an IMDB page at this point with no target release date. Still, we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you all related news as details emerge. In the meantime, refamiliarize yourself with the original RoboCop through the synopsis and trailer below.

Synopsis:
In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company’s nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.
