James Wan is Passing the Torch, Won’t Direct THE CONJURING 3

Though he directed The Conjuring in 2013 and The Conjuring 2 in 2016, 21st Century Master of Horror James Wan (Dead Silence, Saw) is passing the proverbial torch for The Conjuring 3, aiming for a 2020 release date. Stepping into his sizable shoes is Michael Chaves, who recently helmed The Curse of La Llorona (which Wan produced).
THR got the exclusive, and Wan clearly feels like Chaves has got the chops to make some horror movie magic, stating:

“While working closely with Chaves on The Curse of La Llorona, I got to know him as a filmmaker. Chaves’ ability to bring emotion to a story and his understanding of mood and scares make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film.”
For his part, Chaves is raring to go!
“I am a huge fan of the Conjuring films. The movies are the rare combination that deliver both tremendous heart and awesome scares. It is both a total thrill and absolute honor to be working with James and the gang at New Line again.”
The Conjuring 3 is in the earliest stages of pre-production, but The Curse of La Llorona is slated to hit US theaters on April 19th, 2019. As for The Conjuring Universe, there’s already another Annabelle movie in the works eyeing a 2019 release; Annabelle 3 is being written and directed by Gary Dauberman. The Conjuring Universe is a series of American horror films produced by New Line Cinema, The Safran Company, Atomic Monster Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The films present a dramatization of the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, and authors associated with prominent yet controversial cases of haunting. The main series follows their attempts to assist people who find themselves possessed by demonic spirits, while the spin-off films focus on the origins of some of the entities the Warrens have encountered.
