Confirmed: Jamie Foxx to Take on Titular Role in Blumhouse’s SPAWN

The rumors from several weeks ago have turned out to be true as Deadline is reporting that Jamie Foxx has signed on to play Al Simmons in Blumhouse’s Spawn adaptation. The film is written by comic creator Todd McFarlane, who also will be making his directorial debut.
Spawn, which will be going for a strong R-rating, is aiming for a budget between $10-$12 million, a somewhat high for a Blumhouse production which sees films get less than $10 million. For example, Get Out had a budget of $4.5 million and Split had $9 million. That being said, Spawn may see larger set pieces and more intricate practical FX work due to the nature of the story. If this film chooses to show Simmons’ descent into hell and the pact he makes with Malebolgia, we’re certainly going to see something visually astonishing unless they get clever and go the complete opposite route, aiming for a minimalistic sequence.
Previously, McFarlane spoke with Peel the Orange, explaining, “I’d put it more into horror/suspense/supernatural genre. In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.”
Coming back to Foxx, he’s a wonderful, versatile actor who has no problems getting tough and intense. I’m very excited to see what he can bring to this role!
