The Secret Circle and The Vampire Diaries Are a Magical Pair for The CW

Last night saw the return of The CW’s most popular show, “The Vampire Diaries” (which was every bit as good as we were hoping), along with the series premiere of “The Secret Circle” (the jury’s still out on this one, but it does show promise, especially thanks to the adult characters Ethan and Charles); and as expected, they made a magical pair ratings-wise for the network. Along with the Live Plus Same Day Nielsen info for those of you who like reading that sort of thing, we have preview videos of the second installments of both shows to share – “The Hybrid” for “TVD” and “Bound” for “TSC”.

The series premiere of “THE SECRET CIRCLE” conjured magical numbers for The CW, matching an all-time high among women 18-34 (1.9/5) in its time period, according to preliminary Live Plus Same Day Nielsen ratings for Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011.
Perfectly paired with The CW’s hit “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES”, “THE SECRET CIRCLE” retained 100% of its lead-in with total viewers (3.0M), 93% in adults 18-49 (1.3/3), 94% in women 18-49 (1.7/4), 86% in women 18-34 (1.9/5) and built by 11% in female teens (2.0/7). It’s the best retention ever for any series following “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES” among women 18-34 and adults 18-49 and women 18-49.
“THE SECRET CIRCLE” was up +6% in women 18-34 in from the series premiere of “NIKITA” in its time period last year, and even in adults 18-34 (1.3/4) and in women 18-49 (1.7/4). “THE SECRET CIRCLE” averaged a 2.0/7 in female teens, the best performance for the network in that demo since 3/15/07 in the time period.
The third season premiere of “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES” was #1 in women 18-34 in its time period (2.2/7) and #2 in adults 18-34 (1.6/5). “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES” had its best performance in total viewers (3M) and adults 18-34 and women 18-34 since February 2011. It built on the audience from its season finale in total viewers, adults 18-34 and women 18-34 and matched it in adults 18-49 (1.4/4) and women 18-49 (1.8/5).
“THE VAMPIRE DIARIES” and “THE SECRET CIRCLE” cast a spell on viewers across the country, with The CW ranking #1 in primetime among adults 18-34 in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Phoenix, Tampa, Miami, Orlando, Sacramento, Portland and Baltimore. The CW was #1 among women 18-34 in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Phoenix, Seattle, Tampa, Miami, Orlando, Portland and Baltimore.
“The Vampire Diaries” – Episode 3.02 “The Hybrid” (9/22/11 Air Date; 8:00-9:00 PM):
Klaus (Joseph Morgan) puts a plan in motion that will give him even more power, but even with the unwilling participation of werewolf Ray Sutton (guest star David Gallagher), things don’t go exactly as Klaus had planned. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) reluctantly go along with Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) new strategy to find Stefan (Paul Wesley), leading Damon into a dangerous fight with an unexpected enemy.
Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) turns to Matt (Zach Roerig) for help as he continues to try to understand what the ghosts from his past want from him. Unaware that Caroline (Candice Accola) is in need of his help, Tyler (Michael Trevino) faces an emotional confrontation with his mother (guest star Susan Walters).
Josh Butler directed the episode written by Al Septien and Turi Meyer.
“The Secret Circle” – Episode 1.02 “Bound” (9/22/11 Air Date; 9:00-10:00 PM):
In an effort to distance herself from the Circle and establish a normal teenage life in Chance Harbor, Cassie (Britt Robertson) befriends Sally Matthews (guest star Logan Browning), a non-witch.
Concerned their powers are getting out of control, Diana (Shelley Hennig) pushes everyone to bind the Circle, but Faye (Phoebe Jane Tonkin) is thrilled with the increase in her powers and refuses to participate, while Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) flirts with Nick (Louis Hunter) despite Faye’s warnings. Meanwhile Adam (Thomas Dekker) fights his growing feelings for Cassie, but circumstances continue to throw them together, forcing Cassie to make a decision.
Gale Harold, Natasha Henstridge, and Ashley Crow also star. Liz Friedlander directed the episode written by Kevin Williamson and Andrew Miller.
