The last word we brought you guys on director Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was when artist Gris Grimly said the film was still on track… But that was 5 years ago.

“Pinocchio is indeed kicking and has interest from the studios,” Grimly said at the time. “Although I thought it could be quiet for a little while, I never thought it could be canceled. It’s just too good.”

But it looks like the project is dead in the water at this point. Del Toro recently spoke to IGN about the film, and this is what he had to say:

“It’s not happening,” del Toro says. “But the idea was to do Pinocchio during the ascension of fascism in Italy, with Mussolini. It was a good time to discuss the idea of being a puppet or being a human, but you know, it’s not in progress.”

Are you sad to see del Toro’s Pinocchio film put away forever? Let us know below!

With a story by Del Toro, his frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins, and Gris Grimly, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio is a retelling of one of the world’s best-loved tales. The puppet Pinocchio embarks on a series of extraordinary and thrilling adventures, proving himself to be as indestructible as his love for his father. Robbins wrote the screenplay.
