Curious about how the apes in Rise of the Planet of the Apes ended up in a research lab in the first place? Then you’ll definitely want to check out the new weekly online prelude comic that just launched from Boom! Studios in conjunction with 20th Century Fox.

The 10-page prelude lays the groundwork for the story in Rise of the Planet of the Apes with installments being released every Wednesday through August 3, just two days before the film starring James Franco is released.

Written by Daryl Gregory and illustrated by Damian Couceiro and Tony Parker, the comic focuses on two apes, Alpha and Bright Eyes, living happily in the wild when poachers destroy their way of life and sell them into captivity. Their terrifying journey will lead them to the Gen-Sys laboratories, where mysterious drug experiments bring even greater horrors. But could the newly-tested 112 drug bring the key to the captured apes’ liberation, or will it bring even further tragedy?

It’s incredibly exciting to be a part of a new dynasty with one of the most beloved science fiction franchises of all time,” said Ross Richie, BOOM! Founder and chief executive. “We’re proud to be working closely with Fox to tell a prelude story in the fantastic and story-rich world of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes franchise. “From what I’ve already read and seen, I can tell you that the online prelude will be exploding with enough excitement and surprises to whet the appetites of Apes fans new and old.
