Are things looking up for America’s favorite serial killer? Difficult to say considering how slapdash the fifth season of “Dexter” felt, but new showrunner Scott Buck recently talked a bit about what fans could expect when the show returns this fall.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Buck (taking over for Chip Johannessen who was executive producer last year) talked about bringing the character of Dexter Morgan back to basics, offering a more self-centered and assured version of the character than last year’s incarnation. This season takes place one year after the events of season 5, and Dexter will be more evolved.

On the subject of Edward James Olmos, the veteran actor will play Professor Gellar, a renown academic who takes an interest in a series of brutal murders occurring throughout Miami. Buck says this season will feature a murderer unlike any that the show has ever offered … a serial killer on the level of the Zodiac killer or someone equally mysterious. Colin Hanks will play Travis, a strong admirer of Gellar’s “who’s strongly driven by a belief system that compels him to do things he doesn’t necessarily want to do.”

Buck also speaks to the show’s formulaic trappings, indicating that change is in the air: “We’re going into season 6 — let’s not be afraid to break some of the rules that we’ve so highly respected over the years.” It’s encouraging words considering how paint by numbers the last season felt, although one wonders exactly how far off the beaten path the show can stray at this point.

The executive producer/showrunner remains enthusiastic, however, that season 6 will have its share of surprises. “From our opening scene, we begin with Dexter in a place of great danger. Within seconds, you’re going to see Dexter in a place you haven’t seen him before.”

How in the hell can we not be looking forward to that?
