RIP Nicholas WorthThe industry has lost one of the true great character actors of our time. Nicholas Worth (Darkman, Swamp Thing, Scream Blacula Scream) died of heart failure Monday at Van Nuys’ Valley Presbyterian Hospital at age 69.

Believe me when I tell you he was one of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet. If I may, I’d like to share a quick story.

The year was 2003; myself, my girlfriend Debi, Shawn from Rotten Cotton, Johnny Legend, and the guys then from Ex Machina — Stephen Romano, Derek Rook and company — were all hanging out after hours at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors. From across the room Shawn spotted Nicholas and his lovely wife. Nicholas was not a guest at the convention; he was just there to have dinner. Being big fans, we immediately approached Nicholas just to let him know how much we had admired his work.

Here’s a guy who is mostly known for playing villains, but in the face of our adoration he was brought to tears. Happy tears. He was genuinely moved by our appreciation, and we were equally as moved by his reaction. It was just one of those moments, ya know? At the end of the night he took our addresses and said he’d be sending us something. We all walked away that night feeling incredible. It was a time we’d never forget.

Nicholas didn’t forget it either, as within days he sent us all packages containing numerous signed photos. Each one a treasure. This story is a testament to the man’s character. He was just such a beautiful person.

Nicholas, you will always be remembered. You’re forever in our hearts, big guy. Much love.

We here at Dread Central wish to offer our sincerest condolences to Nicholas’ family, constituents, and friends.

Rest in peace, my friend. Till we meet again.

A moment we'll never forget

Steve Barton
