Oprah’s Favorite Cannibals

The Road comes to the big screenThis may or may not be the last time I ever do a news story that mentions Oprah Winfrey, at least for the sake of my sanity it is…

Variety reported this morning that Joe Penhall, whose credits include a movie called Enduring Love, is set to author a screen play based on Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, which was recently chosen by Oprah Winfrey for her book club.

All right, now that that’s out of the way, why the hell do you care as horror fans? Well, it seems the story is a post-apocalyptic tale about a father transporting his son to safety across a nuclear wasteland, battling stragglers and packs of cannibals along the way. And I do love me some cannibals, especially when they’re caused by nuclear expolsions.

Seems an odd choice for Winfrey’s book club selection, though to be fair I’ve never read any of her previous recommendations so maybe she’s always had a taste for horror. Or maybe the book is really a heartfelt story about a father’s love. Yeah, I’m guessing it’s the latter, but if you want to take the chance that it’s not, click here to get The Road through Evilshop.

John Hillcoat, best known as director of the Guy Pearce westerner The Proposition, is on board to direct. No casting will be done until the script is complete, so maybe we will be mentioning the O’s name again on these hallowed pages…
