Phantom of the Mall: Foy’s Revenge

default-featured-image

If you’re reading this right now, then you either successfully survived Black Friday unscathed or had the good enough sense to not brave the crazed thralls storming the mall in search of doorbuster savings. Speaking of shopping mall psychopaths, have you ever seen the Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge? Whether you have or you haven’t, you can now listen to myself and the film’s title star reminisce about this campy 1989 slasher flick.

If you’ve never heard of the website Natsukashi and consider yourself a film geek (especially if you’re a child of the 80’s), then now is the time to correct that mistake. The word “natsukashi” is a Japanese adjective which stands for the state of “feeling nostalgic” or “fond/sweet memory”. The Natsukashi site is all about revisiting movies from one’s youth (or at least a film you haven’t seen in a good long time) to see how the film stacks up after seeing it again for the first time many years later.

The podcast gathers fans like myself, often with a cast or crew member of the film in question, to offer a retrospective of the film’s merits and a behind-the-scenes making-of. You’ll find episodes dedicated to a slew of films well known and some you’ve probably long since forgotten about yourself. For horror fans, recent installments have recalled Nightbreed, Shocker, The Wraith, Beetlejuice, Night of the Comet, Swamp Thing, Night of the Demons, The Sender, and Rawhead Rex, just to name a few.

I made my first appearance on Natsukashi a little over a year ago displaying my near perfect recall of Warlock: The Armageddon. This time the blast from my past was Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge, and the Phantom himself, actor Derek Rydall, was there to provide his perspective on the making of this schlocky but undeniably fun fright flick. He’ll tell you about the outrageous musical number that tragically never got filmed, and I’ll reveal how I may have inadvertently inspired a remake of the film. We’ll all joke about toilet cobras and storefront flamethrowers.

So if you’re a fan of the film, have never seen it but are curious to know what you’re missing out on, or are in need of a few laughs, join Natsukashi host Rob Rector, yours truly, and star Derek Rydall for a fast-paced half-hour of Phantom of the Mall mirth and memories by clicking here.

This reminds me; we’re way overdue for a new Foycast.
