A Ton of New Cthulhu Pics!

Click to see it full size!About a year ago I interviewed Grant Coswell, one of the screenwriters of a long in development film entitled Cthulhu. A modern-day spin on The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Cthulhu is gearing up for this year’s film festival circuit, which means it will not be long until Lovecraft fans get to see it for themselves.

For those of you unfamiliar with the film, the official synopsis reads as such:

Cthulhu follows Russell Marsh, a young, successful history professor at Cascadia University in Seattle. Russ had moved away from his hometown of Rivermouth, Oregon as a young teen, escaping the troubles of growing up gay in a small town. Now, years later, he receives a phone call from his only contact with the family, his kid sister: their mother has died. Click to see it full size! For reasons he cannot understand he has been named executor of her estate and must return to Rivermouth immediately to honor her final wishes. Upon his arrival, things are even more confounding than he expected and just keep getting stranger. Russ again fights his father while trying to reconcile broken ties, as a worldwide environmental and political catastrophe spins out of control to threaten the very survival of mankind. Russ, investigating the cult his father presides over, uncovers a connection between his family and the fate of the world. Struggling against time Russ must choose between accepting his loyalty to those he loves and his seemingly unavoidable destiny in this ancient town governed by the ocean.”

Color me a bit skeptical when you try to jam all sorts of contemporary subtext into Lovecraftian lore, but Grant Coswell set my mind at ease (a bit) with his intelligent replies in the aforementioned interview. Balancing that out is this set of beautiful production stills from Cthulhu. My favorite has got to be the box on the beach, but all of them seem to convey a variety of distinctly Lovecraftian elements in a nice series of photos. Tori Spelling aside, this only further compels me to believe that this production could possibly end up being a modern mythos masterpiece.

Only time will tell, but as the eons pass, be sure to check back here for future updates.
