Stephen Romano's Shock Festival DVD (click for larger image)Author Stephen Romano gave horror fans a rare vintage treat last year with his Shock Festival novel that paid homage to the schlock and B-movies genre by creating a history of visuals and stories about films that only existed in the depths of his massive imagination.

Now Romano has taken his love for underground and obscure films a step further as he talked with Fangoria about his new partnership with POPCinema in offering up a multi-volume DVD collection (also titled Shock Festival) of rarities he dug up with some friends that not only takes scenes from actual films but also incorporates the fictional previews for the movies from his book.

We’ll have three discs just dripping with great stuff,” Romano said, “including over 100 authentic, digitally remastered 35mm trailers from some of the wildest, weirdest, sexiest films ever made.

Romano went on to explain the reasons behind his project by saying, “It’s a celebration of what is perhaps my most favorite modern art form: the selling of exploitation films. Whether you’re in it for the irony, or the true love of the game—I’m in it for both—this is an important and beautiful cultural art form, much of which has been sterilized and dumbed down by mainstream American studio priorities.

The new Friday the 13th possessed about as much soul as a McDonald’s Happy Meal. We need some of the juice back—or at least we need to pay respect to history. We need to get kids interested in seeking out those old, real classics, the ones that might make you laugh your head off at how bad they were—but you never felt like you were getting cheated,” Romano added.
