Horror History: Happy Birthday to the One and Only DOCTOR SLEEP, Ewan McGregor!

On this day in horror history, Doctor Sleep himself, Ewan McGregor was born in Perth, Scotland in 1971. McGregor is best known as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.

That said we all know him for his genre contributions. These include Nightwatch and Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave. Not to mention his role as adult Danny “Dan” Torrance in Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shing sequel Doctor Sleep.

McGregor also starred in classics such as Trainspotting, Trainspotting 2, A Life Less Ordinary, Velvet Goldmine, Moulin Rouge, Black Hawk Down, The Island, The Ghost Writer, Beauty and the Beast, Christopher Robin, and Tim Burton’s Big Fish.

Not to mention his awesome dual role in FX’s Fargo series.

We saw him on the screen last as Black Mask in WB’s standalone Harley Quinn flick Birds of Prey. Up next for McGregor is providing the voice of “The Talking Cricket” in Crimson Peak and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming take on Pinocchio.

Doctor Sleep centers on McGregor’s Danny Torrance. Struggling with alcoholism, he’s still traumatized by the sinister events at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child. His peaceful existence shatters when he meets a teen who also “shines”. Together, they battle a cult whose members feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.

It’s rated R for drug use, disturbing and violent content, language, nudity, and some bloody images. It sports a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Doctor Sleep forsakes the elemental terror of its predecessor for a more contemplative sequel that balances poignant themes against spine-tingling chills.

Mike Flanagan directed the film from a screenplay he adapted from the novel by Stephen King. Flanagan also produced with Trevor Macy and Jon Berg.

Ewan McGregor stars along with Rebecca Ferguson and Kyliegh Curran. Cliff Curtis joins them with Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, and Jocelin Donahue. Alex Essoe rounds out the cast with Jacob Tremblay, Bruce Greenwood, and Henry Thomas.
