DREAD X: ASSASSINAUT’s Drew Bolduc Picks His 10 Favorite Body Horror Moments!

Earlier this week, we released Assassinaut, our dark sci-fi/horror film that comes from writer/director Drew Bolduc. It’s a grim, harsh film that doesn’t pull any punches, even though the main cast is made up of children. The movie recognizes that evil can affect anyone and that age is no barrier or shield. Simply put, kids die and we’re 100% okay with that!
If you’ve seen the film, you know that there are more than a few gruesome body horror moments. That’s why we wanted to delve into Bolduc’s past to see which films inspired this particular love of disgusting yet arresting visuals. And boy oh boy did he deliver!
Below is a list of Bolduc’s 10 Favorite Body Horror Moments, which include some very well known scenes but also a few that some of you may not know.
“In the near future, aliens have invaded Earth and declared a galactic war resulting in thousands of human casualties. To save Earth, a team of four teenage astronauts brave the alien wilderness of a distant planet to stop an assassin from changing the course of history forever.“

Taxidermia
Body horror art film like nothing else really. Every scene is actually pretty much body horror in some way. It’s pretty funny and serious at the same time. Your cat will eat you after you are dead.
Funky Forest: The First Contact
Not exactly body horror. It’s a Japanese comedy? There are scenes in this that put Cronenberg to shame. The weird flesh/human/instrument practice scene is likely the greatest sequence. It’s hilarious even if you don’t know what is happening. This movie probably derailed my career from making more likable films because I loved it so much.
Bonus: Watching this makes Ichi The Killer way better due to some of the shared cast)
Basket Case
What struck me watching this again recently is how much the flashback sequence moved me. This movie works on an emotional level with a lot of psychological depth that I don’t think it gets enough credit for.
The Devils
I was raised Catholic and Catholicism is the body horror of religion. I consider this the most Catholic film of all-time and really depicts the massive mind-fuck of it all. The movie is Gilliam before Gilliam as a director was a thing.
Akira
The expanding pulsating body mass at the end is legendary. The gore in this is pretty beautiful as a whole.
Robocop
The toxic waste scene is the best and was unedited on TV versions of the film that I saw as a kid. This traumatized me for sure.
Vampire Hunter D
There’s a head crush against a wall in this that I saw when I was super young that I will never forget. There’s also a talking hand that eats dirt.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Of course the final triple face-melting scene. It’s a really great way to end a movie.
Total Recall
There’s a lot of great moments in this film, but the ending where the ticking clock is that the characters faces might explode in the atmosphere of Mars is so good. Someone needs to find Rob Bottin and interview him.

The way you connect to the machine is so gross.
