The George A. Romero Archives Unearth Countless Unproduced Scripts

George A. Romero is king. I mean, he practically (if not literally) invented the modern zombie film.

And beyond the extensive universe of his Dead franchise, Romero is single-handedly responsible for delivering countless moments of iconic horror spanning nearly six decades.

The very good folks at Cinematic Void recently took a deep dive into the centre of the George A. Romero archives and were gracious enough to share what they found with readers.

The vault holds 100 unproduced screenplays, finished films, props, designs, and anything your heart could imagine.

If you’ve ever met me, you know I’ve got a full fetish for unproduced horror. I even host a podcast right here on the Dread Podcast Network unearthing lost and forgotten horror projects. So, I was psyched as all hell when this in-depth article from Cinematic Void hit my desk. Eddie Gurrola doesn’t just open the archives, he dives in and takes us along for the ride.

My favorite finds from his recent expedition have got to be the unproduced scripts Romaro never got around to making:

BEFORE I WAKE – An unproduced haunted house screenplay.

MONSTER MASH – A television script taking the Universal Monsters and putting them to work in a M*A*S*H style field hospital (holy shit).

JACARANDA JOE – A fully complete short film made with a community college in Flordia.

THE BELL WITCH – An unproduced horror feature film screenplay.

DRACULA – An unproduced television treatment.

And a hell of a lot more. If you’re interested in a full list of unproduced George A. Romero pages buried in the official archives, check out the University of Pittsburgh online. They’ve got a detailed list of everything in the vault!

Make sure you check out The Void’s descent into Romero madness. It’s like vicariously living every horror fan’s wildest dreams…

Lastly, which unproduced project do you find the most interesting? Let me know on Twitter via @joshkorngut. I’m always down talk about all things horror! You can also let your voice be heard in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! Dread Central is now on Google News!
