H2 vs TFD at the Box Office: Death (and Michael Myers) Defeat Michael Myers

The (almost) final weekend box office numbers are in, confirming our earlier report that David R. Ellis’ The Final Destination had emerged as the champ in its battle against Rob Zombie’s Halloween II. The numbers? $28.3 million (a whopping $9,079 per screen) for TFD (no doubt benefiting from its 3D price bump) and $17.4 million (a much smaller average of $5,754) for H2.

It was the best opening yet for a Final Destination film, but Zombie was about $9 million below his 2007 version.

Halloween II Review! The Final Destination Review! Let's Get Ready to Rumble!!!!

Adding insult to injury for H2, another Michael Myers stole a bit of its thunder. Yes, Inglourious Basterds, in which the Austin Powers star has a cameo, came in at No. 2, pushing Tyler Mane’s Myers down to third place. But, as we also learned a bit earlier today, there’s no need to shed any tears for The Shape since a 3D third chapter has already been greenlit for summer, 2010. Sigh.

But never mind all that hacking and slashing (and scalping) in the 1, 2, and 3 spots. No. 4 is held by the tenacious — and terrific — District 9 (review), which has already tripled its $30 million budget in only three weeks. Sequel and/or prequel talk is, of course, under way for it as well. We’ll have updates on that, along with who will be helming H3 and whether or not we’ve truly seen the final Final Destination as the filmmakers promised at Comic-Con, as it comes.
