Dave Bautista “Blown Away” By Absolutely Enormous New DUNE

Dave Bautista has worked with Denis Villeneuve on Blade Runner 2049. And the Army of the Dead actor we will reteam with him on his upcoming epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. And today, Bautista talked a bit about the film.

In Dune, Dave Bautista plays Glossu Rabban, the cruel and also sadistic nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård).
Bautista tells Collider: “I was blown away [by the script]. I was blown away. It’s weird because when I read Blade Runner when I read Dune, it’s hard for me to know what their visions are. Especially what Denis’ vision is because the worlds they create are just so enormous […] So I read it and thought it was beautiful, I was emotionally invested in the script and the characters…“
He continues: “We tracked that movie for months because I wanted to be a part of it so bad. I never reached out, because I don’t want to be that guy, like ‘Hey, Denis, is there a part for me?’ I never wanted to be that guy. But he actually called me, he didn’t say anything like ‘so there’s this part…’ He just straight up asked me if I would come and play this part. I was so taken aback I didn’t even know what to say, except for, obviously, ‘yes.’“

Villeneuve directs Dune from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, based on the novel. Chalamet, Ferguson, and Brolin’s co-stars include Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, and Javier Bardem. Charlotte Rampling joins in with Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Jason Momoa, Stephen Henderson, and Zendaya
Recently, original Dune star Kyle MacLachlan admits it’s “disheartening” the new film might debut on HBO Max the same day it hits theaters. He tells Seattle Times: “I think the simultaneous release is kind of the wave of the future. It’s disheartening though because a movie like that is meant to be seen on the large screen.”
Dune finds Duke Leto Atreides accepting stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. The only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, the spice. The drug extends life, provides superhuman thoughts, and makes space travel possible. Leto takes his concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images, and suggestive material. Dune hits theaters and also (maybe) HBO Max on October 1.
