For those that like their giant Japanese monster action to have a little more Kurosawa-esque classiness to it, the Daimajin movies of the 1960’s were just that.

Now the giant stone samurai statue of vengeance is preparing to unleash its wrath on North American Blu-ray players for the first time ever.

Having already released the excellent 1990’s Gamera trilogy on Blu-ray in North America, Mill Creek Entertainment has announced plans to give the 1960’s Daimajin trilogy the same treatment in the form of a 2-disc triple feature collector’s edition to be released September 18th.

Synopsis:
In 1966 the Daiei Motion Picture Company – the studio behind Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon and the Gamera series – released a trilogy of films that combined elements of the popular daikaiju (giant monster) and jidaigeki (period drama) genres. Set during Japan’s “Warring States” era, the Daimajin movies told the story of Majin, a giant statue of an angry god that would come to life in times of desperation to punish evildoers. But when Majin’s rage was unleashed, it could be directed at both the wicked and innocent alike.

Disc 1 will contain the first two films in the series, Daimajin and Return of Daimajin, both of which were first introduced to US audiences when American International Pictures released them to American television under the titles Majin, The Monster of Terror and The Return of the Giant Majin. The high definition transfers taken from original film elements created for the Japanese Blu-ray releases will boast both Japanese language-English subtitles and Dolby Digital 5.1 English dubbing.

Disc 2 will feature the third and final film in the series, Daimajin Strikes Again, which was never released in the US until ADV Films imported it for Western audiences in the mid-1990’s. It will be presented with both the Japanese language-English subs and – for the first time ever – a brand new Dolby Digital 5.1 English language audio track.

Filling up Disc 2 will be bonus features provided by Kadokawa Pictures, the production company that currently owns the Daiei library.

All three films will be presented in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Sci-Fi Japan has more details on the set, including comments from Mill Creek’s Vice President of Marketing about the authoring of this Blu-ray set.

The Daimajin Triple Feature Collector’s Edition will retail for $24.98.
