As if we needed a further reminder that 2009 is winding down to a close, this week marks the final first-run episode of the year for Supernatural, the oh so cheerfully entitled "Abandon All Hope". If you wrote off The CW's The Vampire Diaries as nothing more than "Dawson's Twilight", then you obviously haven't been watching the show. Stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley are hitting all the rights notes in their portrayals of star-crossed lovers Elena and Stefan, and we doubt you can find a villain on TV right now who's more fun than Ian Somerhalder's Damon. So it comes as no surprise that the network has given a full season order of 22 episodes for the series.

It's a miserable week for Supernatural fans -- no new episode, but rather a repeat of the Season 5 premiere, "Sympathy for the Devil". But to make up for it, The CW has provided a batch of new photos from Episodes 7 and 8, "The Curious Case Of Dean Winchester" and "Changing Channels", respectively.

Each week The CW's The Vampire Diaries grows on us a little bit more as the plot thickens and we learn the characters' back stories. And this week's episode, "Lost Girls", promises more of the latter as flashbacks reveal why the tensions between brothers Stefan and Damon started. The jury's still out as far as we're concerned as to whether or not "The Vampire Diaries" has what it takes to catch on with hardcore horror fans, but they may not need us anyway ... The show's first episode that aired last night appears to be The CW's most-watched series premiere ever with 4.8 million viewers (subject to final verification later today).

Those of you who are of a certain age no doubt remember the phrase "Must See TV" and its application to NBC's Thursday night lineup of shows during the 1990's. It's been a while since any other network could make that same claim, but starting this Thursday, September 10th, it's possible horror fans will have their own "Must See TV" night on The CW thanks to the pairing of The Vampire Diaries with Supernatural.
