New DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie Filming In Iceland

Cameras are now rolling on Paramount’s new Dungeons & Dragons movie, which will hit theatres in 2023. Chris Pine, who also headlined Paramount’s recent Star Trek film trilogy, stars in the lead role. The supporting cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Jason Wong, and Detective Pikachu star Justice Smith. Prominent romantic comedy actor Hugh Grant will also show up in a small role.

Plot details for Dungeons & Dragons are scarce. But we can expect this to be an action-packed adaptation of Hasbro’s classic fantasy tabletop role-playing game. One with plenty of unique dragon and monster designs. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein also both helmed the comedies Vacation and Game Night. So there will probably also be a fair amount of humor sprinkled in among the action.

Filming is currently underway in Iceland, with production then scheduled to move to Northern Ireland at a later date. Goldstein announced the commencement of principal photography with the following tweet. The film will open in wide release on March 3, 2023.

While it’s arguably one of the most recognisable intellectual properties on the planet, the Dungeons & Dragons franchise really has not found much success whenever it tries to expand beyond the medium of tabletop gaming, with the abysmal 2000 film adaptation being a particular low point. However, we will try to remain cautiously optimistic about the reboot, especially since it features a cast of highly talented actors who have all received praise throughout their careers. Yet the March 3, 2023, release date is quite a long way off, so it will probably be a while before we see the first footage from Dungeons & Dragons. But with any luck, this adaptation will finally be the movie D&D fans deserve.
