DC Boss James Gunn Recommends Underrated Streaming Zombie-Comedy: “This movie is for you”

During the lockdown phase of the pandemic, director James Gunn took to Facebook to share ten of his favorite films that have flown under the radar for one reason or another. There are some great selections on his list, including a few I haven’t seen. Amongst the Guardians of the Galaxy director’s picks is the zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead.

Gunn is an enthusiastic fan of the film but was tight-lipped about the proceedings in an attempt to avoid spoiling the experience for the uninducted. He captioned the recommendation with the following statement: “To tell you anything about this movie could hurt it – but if you love zombies and filmmaking and joy, this is the movie for you while you #QuarantineAndChill.”

If you are keen to check One Cut of the Dead out for yourself, you can head over to Shudder to experience the zom-com in all its glory. Fair warning: One Cut of the Dead is subtitled. But please don’t let that detail deter you. Some of my favorite horror films from recent years have been international offerings.

The setup goes like this: Things go badly for a hack director and film crew shooting a low-budget zombie film in an abandoned WWII Japanese facility when they are attacked by real zombies.

One Cut of the Dead is directed by Shinichirou Ueda and stars Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Harumi Shuhama, and Kazuaki Nagaya. The film made a number of stops on the festival circuit before finally receiving an official U.S. release in 2019.

That’s all we’ve got for you for the time being. Stay tuned to the site in the coming days for more recommendations from cinematic luminaries like James Gunn as we uncover them. Also, be sure to follow @DreadCentral on Twitter so you never miss an update.
