Heaven and Coffin Joe do not mix. But if there is a heaven for Coffin Joe fans, I just experienced it. I was privileged to attend the premiere of Encarnação do Demônio (The Embodiment of Evil), August 5 in São Paulo, Brazil.

Seems like every corner of the world has their own film festival these days, so I really think one needs to be as picky as possible as to which the hit up. The wicked Zé do Caixão, a.k.a. Coffin Joe started terrifying audiences in the 1964 classic At Midnight I Take Your Soul. That film and its sequel, 1967's This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse, are masterpieces of the macabre.

Castile, Raymond (The Embodiment of Evil) Audio

Interview by: Uncle Creepy "What is life? It's the beginning of death! What is death? It's the end of life! What is existence? It's the circle of blood! What is blood? It's the meaning of existence!" That's some deep shit, man. The above rant comes courtesy of the evil Zé do Caixão, a.k.a. Coffin Joe, in the 1964 classic At Midnight I Take Your Soul. That film and its sequel, 1967's This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse, are two of the greatest classic horror films of our time. If you haven't seen them, brother, you don't know what you're missing! As with any good franchise, there's always a sequel looming. Although it's been forty years since Coffin Joe was last a flesh and blood character (in subsequent films Coffin Joe was primarily a hallucination or a guide to the strange), we're finally getting a sequel in the form of The Embodiment of Evil. Enter Ray Castile. Ray has the dubious honor of playing the young Zé do Caixão during a flashback sequence in the new film and was kind enough to stop by and give us the lowdown on how a fan can become a star.
