First Time Director Christina Desiere Has a Dollar and a DreamIf you dream it, you can do it, right? Well, no, that’s not always the case. Those grape jelly pajamas I was trying to develop never really took hold, and I know Uncle Creepy is having all kinds of trouble getting a patent on his line of Finger Paints for Pubes. But for up and coming director Christina Desiere, things are breaking just right… and a lot of that has to do with Stephen King’s Dollar Baby program.

King’s Dollar Baby initiative (more info here) is one of the ways the legendary writer helps launch new talent, and as you’ll see below, Desiere took full advantage of it in her directorial debut. With the short film Harvey’s Dream and some live performance and short film acting on tap, it looks like Christina Desiere is a name to watch in 2012!

From the Press Release
Christina Desiere always wanted to be part of the film industry. As a child growing up in Contoocook, New Hampshire, she realized her dream when she found out you could get paid to play pretend. After graduating with a Theater Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire, she packed up and headed to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

If you told Christina a year ago that she would add writing and directing to her resume, she would have laughed and said, “I don’t have the patience or leadership skills to do those things!” Sometimes, though, things are just meant to be. After reading a story called “Harvey’s Dream” from a collection of Stephen King shorts, Christina thought to herself, “That would make an awesome short film!” Then a colleague named Maria Olsen (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Paranormal Activity 3) told Christina about Stephen King’s Dollar Baby program, and the ball started rolling. Via the Dollar Baby program King allows filmmakers to adapt stories from a list for just a dollar to use for film festivals and reels. Christina was thrilled to see “Harvey’s Dream” on that list.

With the help of producer Adam Chordock, a team quickly put this project into action, and Christina found herself taking on the duties of adapting the short into script form and bringing her vision to life as the film’s director. Of course, she offered a role to Maria, and the role of Harvey went to accomplished television and film actor Robert Craighead.

“Harvey’s Dream” Story Synopsis:
“Harvey’s Dream” is a ten-page short story originally published in the New Yorker in June of 2003l it was later included in King’s own 2008 collection Just After Sunset. The story concerns an older married couple – Harvey and Janet – on a Saturday morning as Harvey recounts a horrific nightmare in which he learned from a phone call that one of their daughters had been killed. As Janet realizes that many of the details of Harvey’s dream are in fact quite true, the phone rings, and Harvey answers it.

Christina is starting off 2012 bigger and better than she had anticipated. Not only does she have her directorial debut to look forward to, but she’s also set to act in two upcoming short films (one she wrote herself) and is in the process of writing an independent feature comedy.

Check out Ms. Desiere’s demo reel below, which features footage from The Caregiver, Devil on My Shoulder, The Occultist, and Vamps in the City. For more information visit the official Christina Desiere website and the Christina Desiere Facebook page.
