Charlize Theron Says Her Character In R-Rated Superhero Film THE OLD GUARD Will Seem Grounded In Reality

Superhero movies are basically the most popular thing in the world right now, so the upcoming R-rated comic book adaptation The Old Guard is bound to find a huge audience when it arrives on Netflix next month. The film stars Oscar winner Charlize Theron as Andromache of Scythia (Andy for short), the leader of a team of immortal warriors who fight to protect the world from evil while also striving to keep their existence a secret.
Speaking to Empire Magazine (thanks to CinemaBlend for the heads up), Theron was quoted as saying that although The Old Guard is a fantasy movie, she felt that the character of Andy was grounded in realism, which is what attracted her to the project. You can read Theron’s full quotation below:
‘My initial reaction when I read the Old Guard graphic novel was that I felt there was something very grounded in Andy. That was the thing that excited me: despite the concept, she felt real, and not ‘fantasy’. So, I tried to bring a genuine exhaustion to her, and not get bogged down in the idea that she’s lived thousands of years, she’s seen it all, and she knows every kind of martial art there is.’
We’re glad Theron said this, because we feel that fantasy movies always need to have a touch of realism, with the characters needing to have believable motives and personalities in order for the audience to be able to relate to them. And from the way Theron describes Andy, it certainly sounds like this will be a realistic character.
After discussing how the main character attracted her to the project, Theron went on to talk about the martial arts training and stuntwork involved, so it sounds like there will be some very entertaining action set pieces. Based on the graphic novel published by Image Comics, which was written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard was filmed in the UK and Morocco last year, with the supporting cast including KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor. It was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, and will be released on Netflix on July 10, 2020. In the meantime, you can enjoy the action-packed trailer below.
