Following a rousing world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival last month, director Josh Koffman keeps the Canadian genre film flame burning with his wickedly nasty thriller Dead Dreams. The film is slated to open in Canadian theatres beginning October 14th in Toronto.

Word of a new Canadian indie horror film (in 3D of course) has hit the Net, and several things about it caught our eye. First off, Christopher Lloyd is part of the ensemble cast, it's being directed and co-produced by the highly regarded young actress April Mullen ("Howie Do It"), and it introduces a new concept to horror fans: zemons!

Unless you're living under a rock right now, and lord knows many of the people who dig this flick do, you're officially aware that the 1989 Canadian gorefest starring Amber Lynn and Barry J. Gillis, Things, will be resurrected from its VHS roots and reborn on DVD on July 12th.

You can't say we didn't warn you there'd be some more distribution news coming out of the Cannes Film Festival. The latest tidbit is that Magnet Releasing (the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures) has picked up US rights and Mongrel Media has acquired Canada from XYZ Pictures to Panos Cosmatos’ sci-fi thriller Beyond the Black Rainbow.

Director Panos Cosmatos definitley has balls. His first feature, Beyond The Black Rainbow, is one of the most psychedelic offerings in quite some time, and the film reaches beyond the abstract into territory few films dare to explore. The question is, does Cosmatos have the vision and the talent to match his confidence? Decide for yourself when you see the film!

We're still not sure if Panos Cosmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow is more sci-fi or horror, but its description certainly seems tailored toward the genre crowd so we're happy to point our readers - especially those attending this year's Tribeca Film Festival - in its direction. Perhaps the two new stills provided to us today will shed a bit more light on the situation.

We're just a few days away from the April 20th start date of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival so over the next week we'll be highlighting this year's genre fare and posting the screening schedules. First up is Beyond the Black Rainbow, written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons.
