Netflix Finally Adds Intense Denzel Washington Thriller Fans Call “A super underrated noir”

I don’t think anyone would disagree that Denzel Washington is a national treasure. The Oscar-winning actor has always made great choices with the roles he takes on and he’s definitely a versatile performer. With that in mind, we tend to keep tabs on where his genre output can be found. As it turns the neo-noir mystery thriller Devil in a Blue Dress has just dropped on Netflix. Heck yes.
Like a lot of Denzel Washington’s output, Devil in a Blue Dress was a hit with both critics and fans. The film sits at an impressive 92% ‘fresh’ rating on popular aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, the picture boasts a respectable 6.8/10 user score on IMDb.
This flick boasts an impressive cast. In addition to Washington, the 1995 thriller also stars the late Tom Sizemore (The Relic), Jennifer Beals (Vampire’s Kiss), and Don Cheadle (Volcano). Walter Mosley (Snowfall) and Carl Franklin (Out of Time) collaborated on the screenplay with Franklin taking the helm.

The setup is as follows: In late 1940s Los Angeles, Easy Rawlins (Washington) is an unemployed Black World War II veteran with few job prospects. At a bar, Easy meets DeWitt Albright (Sizemore), a mysterious white man looking for someone to investigate the disappearance of a missing white woman named Daphne Monet (Beals), who he suspects is hiding out in one of the city’s Black jazz clubs. Strapped for money and facing house payments, Easy takes the job but soon finds himself in over his head.
