Dread Central: Had you known since Afterlife that Paul would be bringing Luther back for this one, or did you have to wait it out a while before you found out?

Boris Kodjoe: Well, the thing is that you really never know until you ultimately get “the call.” But the cool thing about these movies is that they can bring you back anyway- they shoot you five times, it doesn’t matter. You’re still in the next one somehow. Paul always finds a way (laughs).

But I was elated to come back as Luther; this was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my career, and coming back is always like reuniting with family.

Dread Central: This time around Luther has a team of guys with him- Leon (Johann Urb) and Barry (Kevin Durand); did the three of you guys hang out beforehand to bond a bit? You know, doing dude stuff or whatever guys do? (laughs)

Boris Kodjoe: Oh yeah, we dude-ed out, bro-ed out – all of that (laughs). No seriously, we’re all great friends; both Barry and Johann are good friends of mine. I think we’ve all known each other for around 16 years now so a lot of that chemistry is just us. But yeah, we did do a lot of hanging out together before and while shooting. Milla, too, of course; our families are pretty tight.

Dread Central: One of my favorite moments in the movie was the Moscow scene with you guys and the Las Plagas zombies; it looked like a hell of a lot of fun to film- can you talk about your experiences working on that scene?

Boris Kodjoe: It was a really tough scene to shoot; we had to go through six weeks of training to get ready before the Moscow stuff. There were guns everywhere, Uzis blowing things up, breaking zombie necks, getting crazy with chainsaws and one of the most insane car chases I’ve ever seen. It was SO much work for just one part of the movie, but it was worth it; I just saw it a few days ago and it blew me away. It was so badass.

Dread Central: Considering there have been rumors of a sixth and final film, can you talk about where you’d love to see Luther go in the future if you do get to come back? What’s left for Luther to fight for?

Boris Kodjoe: I think Luther is just an Alpha dog; he’s just a leader, he’s a fighter and he wants to survive. At the same token, he also wants to protect his friends; he’s very close to Alice so he will do anything it takes to protect her. Whatever it takes to survive, Luther’s just right in there, brawling. He’s just as confused as everyone else; he doesn’t know who’s who or what’s what so Luther just has to operate on instinct.

Dread Central: I know there are pre-existing storylines out there and everything, but taking into consideration the world of just these movies, what do you think it is about Alice that Luther gravitates towards?

Boris Kodjoe: I think it’s numerous things; I think it’s because she’s a lost soul and he can sense that about her. There’s also the fact that she is a hot, ass-kicking chick, too, and Luther is drawn to winners so there’s that. I mean, let’s be honest- it is a post-apocalyptic world and I’m one of few survivors. There are a few dudes around, and then there’s this hot chick so…yeah (laughs).

Dread Central: Since this is my last question, I just have to ask about Nurse 3D; I was speaking to Doug [Aarniokoski, the director] a few weeks ago for The Day

Boris Kodjoe: What did he say? (laughs)

Dread Central: He just started laughing, much like you just did (laughs).

Boris Kodjoe: Oh, that’s great! All I know is that it was crazy – it was really crazy – when we shot it, and I have less of an idea on how it’s going to turn out so we should just go with what Doug said because I probably know about as much as everyone else does (laughs). But I love that, and this movie will definitely deliver on what people have been hearing about it. It was definitely one of the most interesting projects I’ve ever been involved with- it’s going to be great (laughs). Oh man.
