Final Girls Berlin Film Festival 2021: Video Interview – Jill Gevargizian on Chilling Debut Feature Film THE STYLIST

Jill “Sixx” Gevargizian has become one of the most well-known directors in independent film for her short horror films like Call Girl (2014), 42 Counts (2018), and One Last Meal (2019). In 2016 Gevargizian released her short horror film, The Stylist, which stars Najarra Townsend (Contracted, Wolf Mother) as a shy hairstylist named Claire who doesn’t have any friends and longs to be someone else so badly that she begins carving off her clients scalps so she can wear them. Gevargizian has been a hairstylist for over ten years and is a huge fan of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it’s easy to see how these things inspired her to make The Stylist. The short film screened at genre festivals around the world and won seventeen awards, including The Jury Award at Etheria Film Night and Best Performance in a Short (Najarra Townsend) at Fantastic Fest and Monster Fest.

Fans of the short, including myself, asked Gevargizian when she was going to realize her dream of making The Stylist into a feature film and in 2019, she began a Kickstarter campaign to make that dream come true. The campaign quickly blew past their goal and now the short is a feature film and is currently playing film festivals all over the world. The Stylist screens at Final Girls Berlin Film Festival on February 5th.

Earlier this week, Dread Central was thrilled to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with Jill Gevargizian on Zoom about her first feature film, The Stylist. We talked about how she created the horrifyingly gory effects, Najarra Townsend’s chilling performance, Gevargizian’s dog, Pepper, co-starring in the film, the incredibly twisted ending (no spoilers, I promise) and a lot more! You can watch our interview below!
