You really thought I’d let this column get this far without featuring possibly the greatest b-movie theme song of all time? Sure, you’ve heard Queen’s Highlander theme “Princes of the Universe”, but how many of you have ever actually seen the MTV music video they did for the movie?
Now this is a textbook example of how to do a movie tie-in music video. Clips from the film inter-cut with the band performing the song on what appears to be the set of an instantly recognizable scene from the movie and a cameo by the film’s star to boot.
Hey, if a Frenchman can play a Scotsman and a Scotsman can play a Spaniard, thrn why not let the lead singer of Queen duel an immortal swordsman with his microphone stand?
Though I must say Freddie Mercury probably could have gotten a little less phallic with his microphone stand than he does in this video. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons this video got so little airplay in the US back in 1985 when stroking your musical instruments in a sexually suggestive manner was less socially acceptable than it is today.
A great little seen music video from an at the time little seen b-movie that would go on to become the very epitome of a cult classic. Here’s Queen’s “Princes of the Universe” from the motion picture Highlander (and most every other Highlander sequel and TV show to follow).
