Horror legend and Phantasm star Angus Scrimm has reportedly passed away at the age of 89. According to Entertainment Weekly, frequent collaborator and Phanstasm director Don Coscarelli broke the news of the iconic actor’s passing. Needless to say, our hearts are truly shattered.

Coscarelli said of Scrimm’s death:

Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones. He was 89 years old. His performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last in a long line of classic horror movie stars. Angus was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed.

Scrimm (aka Lawrence Rory Guy) was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on August 19, 1926. After appearing in a handful of movies during the early 1970s, Scrimm worked his way into the hearts (and nightmares) of horror fans around the world when he landed the role of the Tall Man in Don Coscarelli’s 1979 classic Phantasm. He would return to this character several times over the decades, including the as-of-yet unreleased Phantasm V: Ravager.

Through the years, Scrimm has popped up in several other genre flicks, including John Dies at the End, Satanic, Mindwarp (aka Brain Slasher), Chopping Mall, and Subspecies, just to name a few. On the small screen, the actor appeared in a few episodes of the hit series “Alias.” In order to make ends meet, Scrimm wrote liner notes for such artists as The Beatles at Capitol Records.

Our thoughts are with Angus Scrimm’s family, friends, and fans at this time.
