Fans Are Buzzing About The Top-Charting Horror Series On Prime Video: “I am enthralled, I am scared, I feel everything”

The hotly anticipated new Amazon Prime horror series Swarm launched on the streamer today, sending audiences both horror and casual into a tizzy with its surreal descent into pop fandom and the terror within. The synopsis reads, “A young woman’s obsession with a pop star takes a dark turn.” Check out the trailer below.

The series comes courtesy of creators Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) and Janine Nabers (HBO’s Watchman). Dominique Fishback stars as Andrea “Dre” Greene, a young woman embroiled in “murder, sex, and music” whose guiding light is fictional pop star Ni’Jah, a clear stand-in for pop superstar Beyoncé. A member of the colloquial swarm, the show’s conception of Ni’Jah’s rabid fanbase, Dre grapples with her trauma, arriving at some dark, shocking places.

Amazon Prime has been trying to match Netflix in terms of original genre series. Past releases like Them and I Know What You Did Last Summer are indicative of the streamer’s desire to move beyond their form of prestige TV with content more provocative, and given its genre status, more broadly appealing. Nothing generates watercooler conversations quite like the horror show everyone is watching.

Swarm, like some of the best celebrity-centered horror outings, deftly balances both horror and scathing critique. A mishmash of properties, including both Get Out and the underrated Vox Lux, Swarm is often very funny. Yet, there’s an undercurrent of obsession and parasocial mania as Dre delves deeper and deeper into the fandom, highlighting the folly of blind allegiance and fealty to celebrity. Like Glover’s other acclaimed series, Atlanta, Swarm is certain to get people talking. There’s no doubt it will be one of the hottest horror titles of the year.

What do you think? Do you plan to check out Swarm? If you have, what did you think? What about that (now widely known) cameo in Episode 4? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
