Fellow English nerds, rejoice, for we are about to get another disgustingly beautiful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But, instead of the whole novel, director André Øvredal, the madman behind Trollhunter and Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, is taking on just one small section of the novel and expanding it into The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Here, Øvredal tells a deeply Gothic horror story at sea, with Corey Hawkins as our star trying to parse his way through the bloody mystery at hand.

In the film:

Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London.

Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

Hawkins plays Clemens, a doctor who finagles his way on board the Demeter as a member of their crew. As he learns how to work with the crew and captain, he also begins to unravel the mystery of a possible stowaway lurking in the bowels of the ship…

Dread Central spoke with Hawkins about the many forms of Dracula, building his character’s history, and his deep fear of Killer Klowns From Outer Space.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter comes to theaters on August 11, 2023.
