Fan Theory Suggests GODZILLA: AFTERSHOCK Graphic Novel Explores 2014’s MUTO Species

When the Big G rears his enormous head in Godzilla: King of the Monsters this May, it’ll have been 5 years since we last laid eyes on him, back in 2014’s Godzilla. The trailers we’ve seen so far make it look like Mean Green has been rejuvenating in an underwater temple this whole time, but not so. As announced last October, Godzilla: Aftershock is a graphic novel that picks up exactly where Godzilla 2014 left off—and it includes an original (and terrifying) kaiju threat.
Look for Godzilla: Aftershock sometime this Spring via Legendary Comics. Legendary, of course, is the studio behind the entire Monsterverse, meaning everything that happens within its pages is absolutely canon. Whether it arrives before or after Godzilla: King of the Monsters remains to be seen but it definitely fills the space between the two films. Here’s the synopsis for Aftershock:
The brilliant and driven Monarch operative Dr. Emma Russell races to stop the threat as clues emerge to reveal a terrible secret—a tragedy, of apocalyptic proportions from the distant past that changed the course of human history, is returning to threaten it once more. A shadowy figure stalks Emma’s every move as she travels the globe to uncover secrets, while Godzilla clashes in an ancient rivalry as old as the earth itself. The fate of the world lies in the balance in an epic confrontation that no Godzilla fan will want to miss.
Dr. Emma Russell (played by Vera Farmiga) will appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, so this will also flesh out this character’s backstory allowing us to understand her true motivations.
In the video above, one of our favorite UK film critics/academics, Mr. H, lays out a really interesting theory regarding who the mystery kaiju in Godzilla: Aftershock might be—and how there may be yet another direct connection to 2014’s Godzilla. Synopsis:
“Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a
battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with
Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these
ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all
vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”
Directed by Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus’ Michael Dougherty, who co-wrote the film with Zach Shields, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.
This film has been rated PG-13 for sequences of monster action violence and destruction, and for some language. Look for Godzilla: King of the Monsters to demolish US box offices beginning May 31st.
