Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 3.09 – Crazy; First Details on Season Finale Episode 3.10 – Unconscious

Previously, on “Bates Motel”: The gunrunning trip Dylan took on with Caleb to raise money to expedite Emma’s potential lung transplant went sour, leading to a shootout between the father/son duo and the men they were meant to deal with; Bob Paris began to use the secrets he pulled from James Finnigan to turn Romero against Norma; the fallout from this led Norma to fess up to Norman that she’d spilled the beans about his involvement in his father’s death, sending him racing away into the night – and right into a newly returned Bradley Martin.
As this week’s episode (#3.09 – “Crazy”) begins, Bradley wastes no time in telling Norman that her life on the road had been a “living hell” and she’s ready to come home – leading the likely still smitten Norman to put her up at the motel in secret. The two spend the bulk of this episode together, eventually visiting Bradley’s old homestead – only to discover that her mother has already fully moved on, right down to redoing her daughter’s old bedroom. This revelation hits Bradley hard (”I really am dead…”).
Meanwhile, Norma visits Bob Paris and offers to give him the flash drive in exchange for the assurance that Norman’s little secret remain just that. Paris hardly agrees, pointing out that she is in no position to call the shots, but that delivering the drive to him would be in her best interests. This drives Norma to Romero, who assures her that he’s taking care of the drive now – and that their friendship seems to be well and truly over. It’s soon revealed that Romero has in fact turned the drive over to the DEA and is colluding with them in an effort to bring Paris down.
Having just returned from the road, Caleb confronts Chick over the botched gunrunning job he’d put Caleb and Dylan onto, leading to a brutal fight between the two men that leaves Chick bruised and bloody. Caleb then steals from Chick the cash he feels Dylan is owed and delivers it right to his son, before taking off to avoid the inevitable fallout. Dylan delivers this money to Emma’s father to place her higher on the organ donor list and pays Emma a visit as well – the two growing closer and closer with every meeting.
Norman catches Norma cleaning out the cellar of all his creepy taxidermy projects in fear of a reopening of the investigation into his father’s death. Norman turns the tables on her, wonders aloud if Norma, with her constant questionable behavior, might have been the real culprit behind his father’s murder. Norman later confides to Bradley that Norma believes there’s something wrong with him – and that he believes so, too.
Romero finds Norma having broken into his home, looking for the flash drive. He tells her that he’s turned it over to the DEA – leading the two to fight. It’s here that he tries once again to get Norma to admit that Norman killed his father. She can’t bring herself say the words and stalks away – furious and sobbing – but not before Romero tries to kiss her. Back at her home, she’s met by Caleb. He tells her that he’s leaving town for good, but he had to say goodbye first. It’s here that he finally tells her about his previous confrontation with Norman at his motel room the previous year – and that Norman had appeared to believe that he was Norma. Caleb departs, leaving Norma visibly shaken.
As the episode comes to a close, Bradley tells Norman that she’ll be leaving the next morning and asks if he’d like to go with her. He refuses, but the two wind up in bed together before Figment Norma appears and ruins everything – forcing Norman to leave Bradley behind to chat with his imaginary mother.
It was another solid episode this week, with the expected sharp writing and superb acting on display. The various storylines are coming to a head and will likely culminate in the most impressive season finale this series has had thus far. Here’s looking forward to it!

Norma (Vera Farmiga) hits a breaking point with Norman’s (Freddie Highmore) issues; Emma (Olivia Cooke) has a surprising reaction to seemingly positive news; Romero (Nestor Carbonell) seals his fate in the town by finally choosing sides; and Caleb (Kenny Johnson) makes a decision that will uproot his new life.
