Witches. We’ve all had encounters with them in our daily lives, whether they were women who really did practice the dark arts or were just not easy to deal with. But what would you do if you were just a kid and discovered, for real and certain, that your dad’s new girlfriend was a witch … and she didn’t care much for you? I think I’d grow up real fast, too.
Such is the plot of a new movie we were given a heads up about yesterday called 9 Lives of Mara, the directorial debut of Indian filmmaker Balaji Kumar. It deals with a 12-year old boy named Robin whose life is turned upside down when his mother dies and his dad’s new lady has all the outward signs of being a witch. His foul-mouthed best friend, Larry, convinces him that is the case and together they hatch a plan to get rid of her, only to learn just how evil she really is.
9 Lives of Mara is making its debut at the Fright Night Film Festival, which starts today, August 17th, and runs till Sunday the 19th in Louisville, KY. If you’re going to be there, be sure to drop us a line with a report on how it is!
